Big Bend Moon
Heading home on September 18, 2005, the moon was setting in the west and we stopped in the middle of the road for a quick shot. It turned out to be the best photo of the trip.

After waiting out a winter snow storm in a hotel to start our backpacking trip in the Quemadas, we arrived at the trail head to this rare site. The storm had made it over the Chisos Mountains and dusted the southern part of the park.

I love that education was so important to the ranchers in the Big Bend that they established several schools, like here at Dugout Wells. The distances were so great that one teacher would ride on horseback from his ranch Sunday evenings to camp.

A tradition we have - to kiss at every National Park we go to. Everyone knows this place, Balanced Rock on the Grapevine Hills Trail. A fine hike to a great reward.

The four of us woke up while it was still dark and drove nine hours to this much talked about National Park. Our only goal was to have an outdoor adventure and forget about the stress of nursing school for two short days, and yet we discovered much more.
