Educator Professional Development
The Museum offers a variety of programs and resources designed for elementary, middle, and high-school educators that explore artifacts in the Museum's core and special exhibitions, interdisciplinary curriculum integration, and methods for teaching with artifacts.
Workshops take several formats, including half-day and full-day events, multi-day collaborations with other institutions, and interactive videoconference programs.

All programs require advance registration. Please review the schedule of programs before registering and call (512) 936-4649 to make your reservation today. If registering for a program less than two weeks in advance, call to confirm space is still available. Programs may be canceled at any time due to insufficient enrollment.

On-Site Programs

Teacher Orientation Workshop

From self-guided visits to dramatic performances and docent led tours, the Museum has something for all kinds of learners. Before your class visits the Museum, attend a FREE teacher orientation workshop and collect resources to help you prepare for your museum visit including helpful hints about how to arrange a field trip and how to integrate a museum experience into your school’s curriculum.
Led by the education department staff, these workshops are designed to acquaint K-12 teachers with the Museum’s resources and to prepare educators to visit the Museum with their classes. The workshops explore the content and context of the Museum's Exhibits, demonstrate methods for teaching with artifacts, and provide suggestions for integrating primary sources into classroom curricula.

Tango-Alpha-Charlie: Texas Aviation Celebration Professional Development Workshops TBA
The history of aviation in Texas is the story of industry innovation, record-setting achievements, gravity-defying feats and the soaring human spirit. The special exhibition, Tango-Alpha-Charlie: Texas Aviation Celebration opening September 12, 2010, will tell the stories of people who exemplify the spirit that continues to drive the aviation industry in Texas.
This professional development workshop, based on the Tango-Alpha-Charlie: Texas Aviation Celebration exhibition, focuses on how to make the history and science of flight relevant and personal for students. Each educator will receive a FREE TEKS aligned interdisciplinary Educator Guide designed for K-12 classrooms.

Fly Into Aeronautics ™
CPE Hours: 8
Grade Levels: 5-9
October 15
9 a.m. - 5 p.m.
How can a bird fly? How does and airplane stay in the air? Aeronautics, the study of flight, is NASA's middle name and an important part of the NASA mission. This workshop explores air and the principles of flight with fun and simple classroom activities. Build some flying things and enjoy the air around you. Math TEKS and new Science TEKS will be covered in this workshop. BYOS – Bring Your Own Shoebox.
After the workshop, explore the Museum's temporary exhibition Tango-Alpha-Charlie: Texas Aviation Celebration.
Presented by NASA's Aerospace Education Services Project (AESP).

Each two-hour informal session introduces a topic related to the Museum's core exhibits and presents relevant hands-on activities for the classroom. After a guest speaker presentation, educators will have a chance to do one or two hands-on activities that can be brought to the classroom. They are then encouraged to explore the Exhibits. Lesson plans are provided to accompany the lecture and activity.

Pre-service Workshop
Schedule when requested.
Minimum of 15 students (limit 50) per session
Led by the Education Department staff, these workshops are designed to acquaint pre-service educators with the Museum’s resources and education department. Workshops explore the content and context of the Museum exhibits, demonstrate methods for teaching with artifacts, gives a general overview of educator resources available through the Museum, and provide suggestions for integrating the artifacts and other primary sources into classroom curricula.
Distance Learning Videoconference Workshops
Can't make it to the Museum? Don't worry - the Museum can come to you through videoconferencing. All Distance Learning professional development workshops are $350.00 with no limit on attendance.
Gone to Texas! Professional Development Workshop

Grade Levels: 4-12
This three hour professional development workshop focuses on how to make immigrant history relevant and personal for students. Examine the effect of immigration on our lives today through primary source documents, oral histories, and local immigrant histories.
Educators will receive an orientation to the Museum and its educational programs, discover the excitement of object-based learning by exploring primary source material, and learn about conducting oral histories and investigating local immigrant histories.
