The Eiger. For the last century, the very name (often translated as the ogre) has struck cold fear into the hearts of mountain climbers who have coveted its summit but know all too well of its deadly reputation.
The tallest, stormiest cliff face in Europe, the Eiger is considered an extreme climb. It's immense and gorgeous North Face calls like a siren song to those who love the mountains. To climb it one must brave wild weather, shifting conditions and sudden showers of rock and ice – any of which can take a climber’s life in myriad ways. Mt. Everest might be higher in elevation but it doesn’t compare to the Eiger in terms of technical difficulty. The summit of the Eiger remains a rare place for any human being to dare journey – and even more rare for filmmakers.
A study in courage and human possibility, MacGillivray Freeman's The Alps follows one American climber, John Harlin III, who returns to the Eiger on an historic expedition to confront the legacy of his father, a mountain climber who was killed there 40 years before.
Harlin, along with his wife and 9 year-old daughter, who would join him in the Alps, sets off with a team of expert climbers and cinematographers to capture the thrilling beauty and danger of the mountain peaks above Switzerland. With awe-inspiring imagery, The Alps becomes a story not only about a man facing his fears and about the balance humans have struck in the Alps but about family legacies and families sticking by one another.
Narrated by award-winning star of stage, television and screen Michael Gambon (Albus Dumbledore in Harry Potter) and set to the music of classic rock band Queen (who have been long-time residents of Switzerland in the Alpine foothills), The Alps is directed by Stephen Judson and produced by MacGillivray Freeman Films, the makers of Everest, Grand Canyon Adventure 3D, and dozens of other award-winning giant screen films.
