Affidavit of attack on freedwoman
African American woman abducted from home in Wilson County
Acts of violence toward African Americans happened frequently in Reconstruction-era Texas. In this affidavit, Elizabeth Green bravely testified that she had witnessed Kate, a free black women, be abducted on the night of October 6, 1865.
In her affidavit, Green states four men "did forcibly enter the house of one Mary A. Highland, and did take and carry away one Kate, a freed person ... forcibly and without her consent." Green then identifies Kate’s attackers by name and demands that the men be arrested for kidnapping and assault and battery. Kate’s fate and the outcome of the case are unknown.
