Prothro Stoneware Face Vessel
Face vessel reflects African decorative traditions
In addition to the important functionality of pottery in the 19th century, some were made for decorative purposes.
This decorative vessel, crafted by James Prothro in the mid-1850s reflecting African traditions, was crafted with an alkaline glaze, made by mixing ash or lime with clay. This method was perfected in South Carolina and brought to Texas by Prothro, who operated one of three Texas potteries listed in the 1850 Census of Industry and Manufacture.
