Carved statue a welcome site among Spanish Catholic settlers
This santo carved in the late 17th or early 18th century depicts San Antonio de Padua (Saint Anthony). Santos, wooden statues that often represent religious figures, were important objects in the early Spanish colonization of North America. These works of art were focal points for worship and were also daily reminders of faith. These artworks are still created in many Hispanic-American communities today.
