Space Invaders arcade cabinet
An early video game arcade hit
One of the forerunners of modern video gaming, Space Invaders helped expand the video game business from novelty to global industry.
Within a year of its release, more than 60,000 machines were sold in the United States. By 1982, players spent more than $2 billion in quarters, making it the best-selling video game and highest-grossing entertainment product of its time. Legend has it that the game was so popular among Japanese players that it caused a national coin shortage.
