A Summer of Love
The Texas Story Project.
“Did it hurt when you fell from heaven? Because you’re an absolute angel.”
Little did my parents know this awful pick up line would change the course of their lives forever. When my mother was 15, she lived on the northwest side of San Antonio Texas. She sat outside in the 98 degrees with a red and white polka dot bathing suit, basking in the rays of the sun. It was then that a small boy rode by on a bicycle.
He yelled at me from the ground. I was on my parent’s balcony, and I looked over and saw him standing there.“
It was at this moment my father and mother locked eyes for the first time. “He yelled ‘Hey I wanna get to know you.’ and I told him ‘Well, I don't wanna get to know you.’ I was mean like that.” Even though my mother claims she was rather mean to him, my father seemed not to be able to take a hint. ”He asked me’ what do I have to do to take you out?’ to which I replied ‘ How are you gonna take me out? On your bicycle? You don’t even have a car.’ He told me ‘I have a car. How about this? I’ll come back with it and you have to go out with me. You watch.”
This prompted my father to come back in his Chevy Nova. “He laid on the horn in front of my house. I went with him and he brought me home late after going through a ride in the neighborhood. Our next date he took me to a rock concert with a bunch of friends. This began our love affair. He would sneak into my room on the second floor to hang out with me. One time my father came home and boy you've never seen someone run so fast.”
This started a relationship between my mother and father that would constantly draw them back together. Even after breaking up in high school they still managed to find each other years later. They fell back in love even after being with other people. Even now, almost forty years later they still have an irreplaceable bond. The summer of 1977 was their summer of love, so much in fact, that one awful pickup line created the love of a lifetime.
