Many people could overlook the beauty of this area, after all, it's a desert. But if you slow down, as you should in Big Bend, and look around you, you will find there is beauty everywhere. Big Bend is all about solitude and tranquility. It is timeless.

My wife and I undertook the arduous hike to Big Bend's South Rim, something I had always wanted to see. We almost turned back at one point but realized we were never going to have a better opportunity.

Lions and Tigers and Bears, Oh My!
A surprising close encounter with a black bear at Thanksgiving near the Chisos Basin Campground. We were walking and drinking coffee on a trail near our campsite. Mother Bear and her cub were interested in food, and, fortunately, not us.
