The High Chisos
The Chisos Mountains bear little resemblance to their Chihuahuan Desert location but they are in the same National Park and can offer a much needed break from the desert heat below. This was taken on the trail from the South Rim back to the Chisos Basin.
EnlargeThe Border
This is the United States - Mexico border at the mouth of the Rio Grande, Mexico to the left, United States to the right.
EnlargeBalancing Family and Travel
Travel is an essential part of well being and having young children should not deter wayfarers from striking out on new adventures. Here my husband, Caleb, carries our son through Balanced Rock.
EnlargeYellow Cactus Rose of Texas
Cactus blooms are tiny metaphors for life in the desert because beautiful delicate blooms rise from spiny hardy plants. What better metaphor for Texas than a tough survivor, growing in a difficult environment, that still shows a beautiful yellow rose.
EnlargeOrion Over Santa Elena Canyon
This photo was taken just after sunset before the sky became black. The stars come out quickly and bright in the Big Bend and I all I could hear was the gentle sound of the Rio Grande flowing and the coyotes howling as I captured this shot.
EnlargeBig Bend Bluebonnets
Big Bend has its own species of bluebonnet (Lupinus harvardii) that grows much taller than other Texas bluebonnets. I was lucky enough to be in the park this April when they were blooming. I was taking photos of a lovely sunrise when I turned around.
