Mariscol Canyon
Often overlooked and a bit out of the way the Mariscol Canyon is now a favorite spot on my travels to Big Bend. Not easy to reach but worth every drop of sweat that I left on the trail.
EnlargeRio Grande Vista
Looking back when on the Mariscol Rim Trail gives the view of the Rio Grande as it cuts through the desert on its way to the Mariscol Canyon. The contrast of dry desert and green river is striking.
EnlargePuddles
This is "Puddles" the camp Chihuahua that belonged to Troop D of the 8th Cavalry during the Mexican border conflict 1917-1919.
EnlargeNo Way Out
Closed Canyon in Big Bend Ranch State Park is long and circuitous with a significant climb at the end (rope required)... don't go if you don't think you can get back. Never go if rain is threatening.
EnlargeLost Mine Haze
Looking toward Elephant Tusk on a hazy morning near the end of the Lost Mine Trail.
EnlargeSky Island of Abundance
Dinner is served! A smorgasbord spread 20 feet in the air. A female lucifer hummingbird, flown in from Mexico to build a nest and raise her young in Big Bend, stops by to dine on agave nectar.
EnlargeTime and Water
Closed Canyon in Big Bend Ranch State Park was carved over eons of times by water. It is a very slow geologic process we can only marvel at with our brief window of time in this places.
EnlargeRoss Maxwell Scenic Drive
This was taken on the way to Santa Elena Canyon down the Ross Maxwell Scenic Drive. The cliff in the background eventually gives way to the Santa Elena Canyon to the west.
