Mining Days
Mining played a big role in the Big Bend area, especially with the mining of cinnabar, the raw ore from which mercury is extracted. This large pulley wheel is a reminder of those days long ago.
EnlargeRiver Trip
There is nothing like a trip down the Rio Grande through Santa Elena Canyon in the Big Bend National Park. The size of the canyon walls closes around you and you feel really small in the magical place.
EnlargeIt's the Little Things
Big Bend is so vast that sometimes when you are taking in the big picture, you forget to look down.
EnlargeHen Egg

EnlargeBalanced Rock Vista
View from balanced rock, Grapevine Trail. Great variety of rock formations and a vista into Mexico.

EnlargeSanta Elena Solitude
I find myself going to Big Bend to escape the masses, and hence go at times when there is no one in the park to enjoy a private sunrise by myself. This predawn photo depicts the first glow, and a rising moon as well as the final twinkles of night time.
