Bullock Museum to Host Free Spooktacular Celebration on October 27

The family friendly Halloween event returns with an under the sea theme

OCTOBER 24, 2023 (AUSTIN, TX) — The Bullock Texas State History Museum, in partnership with Girlstart, will host its annual free Halloween celebration on Friday, October 27 from 5 to 8 pm. Families are invited to put on their favorite ocean-themed costumes for an evening of free STEAM fun.

“If your family is looking for Halloween fun, you need to come out to Spooktacular. There is so much going on—activities and games, live music, hands-on STEAM learning, a kids’ costume contest, great prizes—something for everyone!” said Lucchese Hamilton, Bullock Museum Programs Coordinator.

The Austin nonprofit Girlstart will once again partner with the Bullock Museum for this year’s event to offer spooky activities that encourage exploration in science, technology, engineering, arts and math (STEAM). Activities include creating boo bubbles, spinning spiderweb plates, crafting LED wearables, engineering candy corn cannons, and creating eerie slime.

Dragon’s Lair Comics & Fantasy Austin will judge the evening’s under-the-sea-themed costume contests, and the winners will receive Homestead family memberships to the Museum. Additionally, visitors will enjoy treats provided by H-E-B, rock out to the School of Rock Austin’s house band, The B Team, and explore the Museum’s three floors of galleries after hours with a spooky scavenger hunt.

The evening’s underwater theme is in honor of Sharks, a special exhibition from the American Museum of Natural History that will open at the Bullock Museum on November 11. In its first stop outside of New York, the exhibition will allow Bullock Museum visitors to come face to face with the ocean’s most magnificent and misunderstood species. The exhibition showcases the diversity of prehistoric and modern sharks through a parade of life-size models and allows visitors to learn about these incredible creatures through interactive games, dynamic media, a life-size replica of megalodon jaws, and more.
