The Bullock Museum to host sixth annual American Indian Heritage Day celebration

SEPTEMBER 24, 2018 (AUSTIN, TX) — The Bullock Texas State History Museum, in partnership with Great Promise for American Indians, will host the sixth annual American Indian Heritage Day celebration on Friday, September 28.  The free public event will offer guests a chance to explore the exhibition Comanche Motion: The Art of Eric Tippeconnic starting at 6 pm and enjoy American Indian dancing and drumming performances starting at 6:30 pm.

Throughout the day, Texas students will have the opportunity to learn about the historic, cultural, and social contributions American Indians have made to the state through educational activities and performances exclusively for school groups. In the evening, the public is invited to enjoy the traditional and contemporary arts of Texas's American Indian groups with performances by Great Promise and to explore Tippeconnic's artwork celebrating Comanche culture of the past and present.

"Texas has been home to diverse and complex peoples for more than 16,000 years. We are privileged to share that heritage and provide connections between past, present, and future for school children and members of the public who come to our celebration each year," said Kate Betz, Head of Education and Interpretation for the Museum. "This year we are especially pleased to be able to present thrilling performances paired with the contemporary visual art seen in Comanche Motion, engaging in our shared history in new ways."

Led by State Representative Roberto Alonzo Dist. 104 (D-Dallas), members of the Texas State Legislature passed H.B. No. 174 in 2013 to create this day in order to recognize and honor the history and heritage of American Indians in Texas. Held the last Friday in September each year, the American Indian Heritage Day celebration highlights the contributions of American Indian communities to the state with ceremonies, activities and programs.

Comanche Motion: The Art of Eric Tippeconnic, on view at the Bullock Museum until January 2, 2019, tells the story of a thriving Comanche culture rooted in the past but evolving toward the future with 34 original paintings, Comanche artifacts, immersive multimedia experiences, and hands-on activities for all ages.
