Bullock Museum to Offer Free Exhibit Admission for Military Families All Summer

The Museum will participate in the Blue Star Museums program from Armed Forces Day to Labor Day

MAY 10, 2023 (AUSTIN, TX) — The Bullock Texas State History Museum is proud to join museums nationwide in participating in Blue Star Museums, a program that provides free admission to the nation's active-duty military personnel and their families during the summer. Free exhibition admission for military families will be available from Armed Forces Day on Saturday, May 20 to Labor Day, September 4, 2023.

“In recognition of, and gratitude for, the service given by all of our active military personnel and their families, we are honored to participate in Blue Star Museums again this year,” said Bullock Museum Director Margaret Koch. “We hope this effort provides them with opportunities to experience the Bullock throughout the summer with fewer economic barriers."

Military families are invited to explore three floors of Texas History Galleries and the special exhibition, The Harmon and Harriet Collection of African American Art: Works on Paper, on view May 20 through October 1. The exhibit showcases one of the most comprehensive shows of works by Black American artists from the early 20th century to the present. Featuring watercolors, etchings, screen prints and more, the exhibit highlights the rich history of Black art in America.

“We thank the 2023 Blue Star Museums who invite military personnel and their families to experience the many wonders they have to offer, whether it’s a glimpse into the past, an encounter with awe-inspiring art, or a moment of discovery,” said Maria Rosario Jackson, PhD, chair of the National Endowment for the Arts. “The Bullock Museum is helping to enrich the lives of military families and build meaningful connections between our nation’s military and their local community.”

The Blue Star Museums program is an initiative of the National Endowment for the Arts in collaboration with Blue Star Families, the Department of Defense, and more than 2,000 museums nationwide. Free admission is available for those currently serving in the United States Military, including Army, Navy, Air Force, Marine Corps, Coast Guard, members of the Reserves, National Guard, U.S. Public Health Commissioned Corps, NOAA Commissioned Corps, and up to five family members. Qualified members must show a Geneva Convention common access card (CAC), DD Form 1173 ID card (dependent ID), or a DD Form 1173-1 ID.
