Bullock Museum to offer free exhibit admission for active-duty military families all summer

The Museum will participate in the Blue Star Museums program from Armed Forces Day to Labor Day

MAY 16, 2024 (AUSTIN, TX) — The Bullock Texas State History Museum is proud to join museums nationwide in participating in Blue Star Museums, a program that provides free admission to the nation's active-duty military personnel and their families during the summer. Free exhibition admission for military families will be available from Armed Forces Day on Saturday, May 18 to Labor Day, September 2, 2024.

“It is our honor to recognize the service given by the nation's active military personnel and their families every day by participating in Blue Star Museums,” said Bullock Museum Director Margaret Koch. “May this token of gratitude, sponsored by an anonymous donor, spark wonderful experiences for those who have dedicated their lives to our country."

Military families are invited to explore three floors of Texas History Galleries and the special exhibition Carros y Cultura: Lowriding Legacies in Texas, on view through September 2. With lowrider cars and bikes on display, Carros y Cultura introduces visitors to the rich culture that is Texas lowriding. Visitors can meet the people who make lowriding a community through media pieces and interviews, and learn how, together, car and driver maintain a legacy that has been nurtured across generations of lowriding families to build a phenomenon that has been imitated, adopted and adapted around the world.

The Blue Star Museums program is an initiative of the National Endowment for the Arts in collaboration with Blue Star Families, the Department of Defense, and more than 2,000 museums nationwide. Free admission is available for those currently serving in the United States Military, including Army, Navy, Air Force, Marine Corps, Coast Guard, members of the Reserves, National Guard, U.S. Public Health Commissioned Corps, NOAA Commissioned Corps, and up to five family members. Qualified members must show a Geneva Convention common access card (CAC), DD Form 1173 ID card (dependent ID), or a DD Form 1173-1 ID.

“Military families love Blue Star Museums, and we couldn't run this program without the National Endowment for the Arts and the museums across the nation who show they care by participating,” said Blue Star Families CEO Kathy Roth-Douquet. “Access to museums enriches military families, creates wonderful family memories, and helps us feel connected to our communities so that we can thrive and do the hard job we have to do for the country. I am delighted for us to launch the 14th year of this very special program.”

The Bullock Museum's exhibition galleries are open Monday through Sunday, from 10 am to 5 pm. For more information, visit www.TheStoryofTexas.com. For details about free admission eligibility, visit the Blue Star Museums website.
