Bullock Museum announces long-awaited return of Music Under the Star

Free summer outdoor concert series returns with monthly performances on the new Capitol Mall

MAY 28, 2024 (AUSTIN, TX) — The Bullock Museum is thrilled to announce the return of Music Under the Star, a free outdoor concert series in the new Capitol Mall Amphitheater in front of the Museum. Guests are invited to enjoy an incredible lineup of Texas artists on the evenings of June 14, July 19 and August 9 starting at 6 p.m.

“This year’s Music Under the Star features an incredible lineup of artists representing a variety of genres and musical styles,” said Jessica Hanshaw, Public Programs Manager at the Bullock Museum. “It’s a fantastic opportunity for the community to come together in celebration of Texas music.”

Beginning in 2003, Music Under the Star was a favorite summer event for Austin locals and visitors alike. The last Music Under the Star took place in 2017. The series then took a hiatus due to the construction of the Texas Capitol Mall. Now the program is back and better than ever with a Friday night monthly concert series that spans the entire summer. Guests are invited to bring their whole family, along with camp chairs and blankets, and hang out on the new green space in front of the Museum to listen to some fantastic local musicians.

The concert series kicks off with a headlining performance at 7:30 p.m. by the Peterson Brothers on June 14. The Texas natives combine infectious energy and modern grooves with jazz, funk, blues and soul to create their unique sound. Kamica King, a Dallas-based singer-songwriter, will open the night at 6 p.m. with her radiant stage presence and folk/soul sound informed by jazz and her Afro-Caribbean roots.

Continuing the series on July 19, Max Baca and Los Texmaniacs will return as headliners at 7:30 p.m. Max Baca and Los Texmaniacs combine Tex-Mex Conjunto, Texas rock, blues, and R&B riffs to create their GRAMMY® award-winning groove. At 6 p.m., Chayito Champion and Keli Rosa Cabunoc, two San Antonio-based artists who joined forces in the Texas Folklife Apprenticeship program, will open the night. With their backgrounds in Flamenco dancing and in playing traditional music from Veracruz, Mexico, respectively, this unique pairing brings together two musical and cultural worlds that exist within Chicano and Tejano culture.

Rounding out the series, Austin-based musician, singer, storyteller, and songwriter Guy Forsyth returns for an unforgettable headlining performance on August 9 at 7:30 p.m. A winner of several Austin Music Awards, Guy delivers diverse roots music, with an emphasis on classic and original blues, where the story always comes first. The South Austin Moonlighters, regulars in most of the finer honky-tonks, listening rooms, and venues throughout Texas and beyond, will open the night at 6 p.m.

Parking is available for $15 in the Bullock Museum’s underground garage. Parking is free for Museum Members with a Music Under the Star parking voucher. Food and drinks will be available for purchase at all Music Under the Star concerts. Guests can purchase band merchandise through the Bullock Museum Store at the events. Program sponsors KUTX 98.9 will also be on hand to support the event.

Music Under the Star performances are from 6 to 9 p.m. on June 14, July 19 and August 9 on the Texas Capitol Mall in front of the Bullock Museum. For more information, visit TheStoryofTexas.com/muts
