Bullock Museum highlights Texas BBQ in a 10th anniversary Texas Focus Film Series screening of For the Love of Meat

Event highlights Texas BBQ through a film screening, panel discussion and meet and greet

FEBRUARY 18, 2025 (AUSTIN, TX) — The Bullock Museum will host an event celebrating Texas barbecue with filmmakers, legendary pitmasters and barbecue experts on Saturday, March 1. The event will feature a meet and greet and barbecue tasting, followed by a screening of For the Love of Meat and a panel discussion.

“Barbecue is a Texas tradition, from the wood that fuels the smoke to the meat from Texas farms and ranches, brought together by dedicated pitmasters and providing locals and travelers a taste of Texas,” said Kristin Johnson, Head of Public Programs at the Bullock Museum. “The Bullock Museum is excited to share stories of Texas barbecue through a special anniversary screening of For the Love of Meat.”

A cinematic exploration of the Texas narrative, the Bullock Museum's Texas Focus Film Series highlights stories by, for and about Texans. Each event in the celebrated series includes a film screening followed by Q&A sessions with scholars, filmmakers and actors, examining the film's relevance to the modern world.

For the Love of Meat sits down with some of the top pitmasters in central Texas to explore the philosophy, history and process behind their craft — from the wood, to the pits, to the meat, to the technique and skill. Aaron Franklin of the now famous Franklin Barbecue in Austin, Tootsie Tomanetz of Snows BBQ in Lexington and Wayne Mueller of Louie Mueller Barbecue in Taylor are featured in the film, along with appearances from pitmasters at City Market, Laird's, Cooper's, Opie's and many more.

The Texas Focus Film Series event begins at 6 p.m. with a sold-out social hour featuring BBQ tastings from Micklethwait Barbecue, a selection of drinks and meet-and-greet time with the For the Love of Meat filmmakers and panelists. General admission starts at 6:45 p.m. with the screening of For the Love of Meat beginning at 7 p.m. in the Texas Spirit Theater. The film will be followed by a panel discussion with film producers Jeff Jones, Matthew Johnson, Brandon Gonzales and Matthew Wallis; Texas Monthly Barbecue Editor Daniel Vaughn; and pitmasters Tom Micklethwait (Micklethwait Barbecue), Wayne Mueller (Louie Mueller Barbecue) and Kelli Nevarez (LaVaca BBQ).

The 10th anniversary screening of For the Love of Meat will take place at the Bullock Museum on Saturday, March 1. Tickets are $12 for general admission and $8 for Museum Members. For more information, visit TheStoryofTexas.com.
