Take a trip outside the museum walls and back in time as we travel to historic sites linked to settlement and strife in Texas. First we will visit the San Sabá Presidio site near Mission Santa Cruz de San Sabá for a tour and talk from archeologists Kay Hindes and Tamra Walter. Next, guests will tour the grounds of Fort McKavett, which was once described as the "prettiest post in Texas" by Gen. William Sherman. These two sites, built in close proximity but a century apart, are a physical manifestation of the generations long struggle between Comanche, the "Lords of the Southern Plains", the Spanish and later, American settlers for control of the region.

Historian and archeologist Kay Hindes has worked as the City Archeologist for the City of San Antonio since 2003. A specialist in Spanish Colonial mission archeology and archival research, Hindes was instrumental in the locating the site of Mission San Saba as well as identifying the second location of Mission Espiritu Santo in Victoria. She is the author of The Rediscovery of Santa Cruz of San Sabá, A Mission for the Apache in Spanish Texas. She recently received the Texas Historical Commission’s Award of Merit in Archeology for her contributions to historical preservation.
Tamra L. Walter is Associate Professor of Archeology and Anthropology Graduate Advisor at Texas Tech University. She specializes in Historic archaeology, Spanish Colonial Texas, and coastal Ecuador. Dr. Walter led excavations of the San Sabá Presidio site and served as consultant to the Texas Historical Commission on the project.
$50 members, $60 non-members. Lunch, transportation and tours included. Bus departs the museum promptly at 8am and returns at 5pm. Space is limited!
