Texas Artist Series: Vincent Valdez

Programs

April 2, 2016 2:00pm - 3:00pm

Experience the rich diversity of Texas' cultural heritage. From world-renowned concert pianists to award-winning authors, cutting-edge filmmakers, and innovative dance troupes, this series explores the arts.

Spend the afternoon with Vincent Valdez, performer and official Texas State Artist, as he shares his painting series, The Strangest Fruit, through a multi-media presentation.

Valdez' work often touches on the culture and history of his native San Antonio community and region. In this program, Valdez will explain his artistic process and share images from his recent work which re-stages scenes from a troubling page of Texas history, and interprets and responds to that history in the context of the modern world.

In addition to the visual art on display, the program will feature a live performance of corridos. These beautiful folk ballads have kept the history of Texas border communities alive and played an important role in Texas-Mexican cultural identity as they have been passed down from one generation to the next.
