Enjoy a day full of exploration and learning at the Bullock Museum.

Before even reaching North America, the explorer La Salle’s expedition was attacked by pirates! One of his four ships was captured. This exciting story of exploration is the inspiration for this STEAM Activity Challenge hosted by Skillpoint Alliance and the Bullock Museum. Students ages 6 to 14 will spend 9:00 am-2:00 pm at the Museum investigating the La Belle shipwreck, creating a pirate/explorer themed game using microcontrollers, and exploring STEAM concepts.

This program is FREE. Participants must bring their own lunch and snacks. Registration is limited to 15 students per age group.

Ages 6 to 9

Students will be challenged to build a pirate/explorer themed game that will use a MakeyMakey microcontroller and the programming language Scratch, to integrate physical activities into digitally created interfaces. This project will lead up to an epic marshmallow shooter challenge at the end of the day! We’ll be exploring concepts like:

  • Science: trajectory, air pressure, velocity,
  • Technology: MakeyMakey, Scratch
  • Engineering: material properties, design/build/iterate
  • Art: history, game design
  • Math: game scoring

Ages 10 to 14

Students will be challenged to build a pirate/explorer themed game that will use MakeyMakey microcontrollers and the programming language Scratch, as well as the Intel Galileo. This game will incorporate exciting programming tools, explore the IoT, and Physical Computing. At the end of the day students will participate an epic marshmallow shooter challenge, utilizing compressed air, hand built scoring devices and switches, servos, and relays! We’ll be exploring concepts like:

  • Science: trajectory, air pressure, velocity,
  • Technology: Arduino, IoT, Physical Computing
  • Engineering: material properties, design/build/iterate
  • Art: history, game design
  • Math: scoring, calculating distance, calculating psi related to distance
