Made to Walk the Skies

Texas and Space Travel

Print Page

From the early Gemini, Apollo and Skylab projects to today's Space Shuttle and International Space Station programs, Texas continues to play a leading role in space exploration.

In 1961, the Manned Spacecraft Center was established in Houston and became the home of Mission Control and the astronaut training program. In 1973, the Center was renamed in honor of late President and Texas native, Lyndon B. Johnson.

This special exhibition chronicled the state's role in space exploration by featuring compelling stories as well as historic equipment including space suits, lunar samples, and a mission control panel.
