Enjoy a FREE day full of discovery and learning for homeschool families.

Event Details

Explore the Mexican culture and history at the Bullock Museum this fall as we celebrate National Hispanic Heritage Month. Discover the interconnected histories of Texas and Mexico in our second floor galleries and examine artifacts in the Legacies of the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo special exhibition. Join us in hands-on activities and special Mexico-related classes that explore the exciting culture and history of our neighbor across the Rio Grande, from its ancient people to the present day.

Museum admission is free for homeschool families and RSVPs are not required. Discounted school group rates for films in the IMAX® Theatre and Texas Spirit Theater are available from 10 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.; film tickets may be purchased in advance online and at the Museum on Homeschool Day.

Directions and Parking Information 

Attend special hands-on activities between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m.

  • 10:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. Explore the colorful history of different types of Mexican folk art and paint your own Talavera tile at this special paid class.
  • 11 a.m and 12:00 p.m. Enjoy a story time about Mexican artist Frida Kahlo and her animal friends. 
  • 12 p.m. and 1 p.m. Examine the Mexican Constitution of 1824 in our first floor gallery and chat about its importance for Mexico's and Texas's histories with a museum curator
  • 12:30 p.m. to 1:30 p.m. Discover the flavors of Mexico by smelling different herbs and ingredients used in kitchens across Mexico. Then, paint your own terracotta pot and plant your own Mexican herb garden.

Drop in anytime between 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. for activities, resources, and exhibitions

  • Explore the map of Mexico and observe its incredible geographic diversity with an interactive map scavenger hunt.
  • Master Mayan math by connecting symbols with numbers using the same system that the Mayans, a people indigenous to parts of Mexico, historically used. 
  • Touch Mexican embroidery and make your own paper doll featuring one of the costumes of some of the states of Mexico.
  • Test your Spanish language vocabulary and your cooking skills with a game that matches Spanish words with common foods and ingredients eaten in Mexico. 
  • Examine hojalata art, Mexican tin folk art, and then craft your own tin art using popular hojalata images from Mexico. 
  • Explore stations with community partners, including Girlstart, the Mexican American Cultural Center, MexicArte Museum, Ballet Folklorico Mexikayotl, and Latinitas. 
  • Visit the special exhibition Legacies of the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo to examine the history and legacy of the U.S.-Mexico War and how the treaty impacted both Texas and Mexico.
  • Buy tickets to see IMAX® documentaries Train TimeAnimal KingdomLasting Impressions, and Ancient Caves and tickets to the Texas Spirit Theater films Shipwrecked and The Star of Destiny.
  • Explore Museum exhibitions with educational activity guides.

Available Classes

Hands-on classes give your students an opportunity to spend more time exploring topics that relate to the art and culture of the numerous communities and cultures in Texas.

Classes are $10 per student. Accompanying adults do not need tickets. Due to demand and class capacity reservations are recommended. On the morning of Homeschool Day, online class registration will close, but tickets can be purchased at the Museum while available. See class information and tickets below.

  • ¡Arte Popular!: Making Mexican Folk Art | 10:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. 
    (recommended for all ages)

    Discover the colorful history of Mexican folk art! Examine popular patterns and colors that decorate homes across Mexico and trace how Mexico’s people and geography turned Spanish crafts into Mexican icons. Then, create your own painted Talavera tile to take home with you! 
  • Spice It Up: Plant a Mexican Herb Garden | 12:30 p.m. to 1:30 p.m.
    (recommended for all ages)

    Explore Mexico's food history and explore some of the common smells you might encounter in different kitchens across the country.  Then, decorate your own terracotta pot, and plant your own Mexican herb garden so you can incorporate those exciting flavors into your own food any time you want!
