Experience how Texans applied their math skills to comply with food rationing in World War II. Uncover the biological properties of chili peppers that make them a vital part of Texas cooking. Find out what exactly science, technology, engineering, the arts, and mathematics (STEAM) have to do with Texas history!

On select Thursdays at STEAM Lab, students can drop in and explore the Bullock Museum, see demonstrations, and participate in hands-on activities with STEAM experts from Central Texas Discover Engineering and Museum Educators. STEAM Labs are FREE with Museum admission for all groups who have pre-registered for a Bullock Museum field trip. Every STEAM Lab is different and may include some of the following activities:

  • Electricity with a Van de Graaff Generator
  • Build a Lunar Landing Module
  • The Science of Chili Peppers
  • Make a Helicopter
  • Play a Civil War Probability Game
  • Evolution and Bird Beaks
  • Using a WWII Rationing Budget
  • Water Sound Engineering
  • Create a Dust Storm
  • Organize a Tangled Texas Food Web
  • Build and Race a Boat
  • Create a Pickle Light
